Teachers supporting teachers: Episode 8 with Athanasia Henderson and Emma Carmody
Say hello to Athanasia Henderson and Emma Carmody. In this episode we hear about different approaches to flexible and remote learning from two pre-service teachers in their final year studying to be primary teachers at Swinburne. Athanasia is working with a composite Grade 4,5 and 6 class with her mentor who is working online plus one day a week in the school to support those students on site with parents who are essential workers. While, Emma is working with a composite Grade 3 and 4.
In this episode we discuss what life as a pre-service teacher undertaking a placement is like during flexible and remote delivery. And what I love about this episode is that Emma and Athanasia share their insights the Friday afternoon post their first week. So many wonderful insights and considerations shared that are sure to support you in your own development.
Our chat is guided by the following questions:
1. So, a week into remote and flexible teaching, how has this been for you?
2. What new technology have you been engaging with? What does it involved?
3. What have you had to learn? Have you been able to share technology you think works well?
4. What have you noticed about how you are working with your mentor?
5. What surprises have you noticed about the students you are working with?
6. How are you managing your time? What does a day look like for you as a “working teacher” in the remote and flexible space?
7. And top tip for other pre-service teachers.
Things to take away:
How will you embrace:
• Flexibility in more ways than one – the role of the teacher and student, how to engage learners, with technology, and in working with your mentor teacher.
• Learning from each other and forming a team
• Embracing newness
• Being open-minded
• Framing change as a valuable experience
• Being open to being excited.
